    Having trouble getting the sound meter to work? This guide will help you fix the most common issues.

    Best results on mobile

    Smartphones have built-in microphones designed for voice, which makes them well suited for noise measurement. Desktop and laptop microphones vary wildly in quality — many external webcams and headsets apply noise cancellation or automatic gain that distorts readings. For the most reliable results, use this tool on your phone.

    Common Problems

    "Microphone access denied"

    Why: Your browser blocked microphone access, either because you clicked 'Block' on the permission popup, or because of a browser/system setting.

    Fix: Follow the browser-specific instructions below to re-enable microphone access.

    "No microphone found"

    Why: Your device has no microphone connected, or the microphone is disabled in system settings. This is common on desktop PCs without a webcam or headset.

    Fix: Connect a microphone, headset, or webcam with a built-in mic. Make sure it's enabled in your operating system's sound settings.

    "Microphone is busy"

    Why: Another application (a video call, voice recorder, or another browser tab) is already using the microphone.

    Fix: Close other apps that might be using the mic — video calls, voice recorders, other tabs with microphone access. Then try again.

    Readings seem stuck at the same level

    Why: Some devices apply aggressive noise cancellation or automatic gain control that flattens the signal.

    Fix: Try disabling noise cancellation in your system audio settings. On laptops, check the manufacturer's audio control panel (e.g. Realtek, Dolby). Or use a phone instead.

    Readings are very inaccurate

    Why: Desktop microphones are not calibrated for sound pressure measurement. Headset mics and webcam mics sit too close to your mouth or too far from the sound source.

    Fix: This tool works best with a smartphone held at arm's length. Desktop readings should be treated as rough estimates only.

    Enable Microphone by Browser

    Google Chrome

    1. Click the lock/tune icon in the address bar (left of the URL)
    2. Find 'Microphone' in the permissions list
    3. Change it from 'Block' to 'Allow'
    4. Reload the page and try again

    Firefox

    1. Click the shield/lock icon in the address bar
    2. Click 'Connection secure' → 'More information'
    3. Go to the 'Permissions' tab
    4. Find 'Use the Microphone' and set to 'Allow'

    Safari (Mac)

    1. Go to Safari → Settings → Websites → Microphone
    2. Find this website in the list
    3. Change the setting to 'Allow'
    4. Reload the page

    Microsoft Edge

    1. Click the lock icon in the address bar
    2. Find 'Microphone' in the permissions
    3. Change to 'Allow'
    4. Reload the page

    Desktop & Laptop Tips

    Desktop computers often don't come with microphones built in. Even when you connect one, the setup varies widely:

    • Webcam microphones work but sit far from sound sources and often have noise reduction enabled by default.
    • Headset microphones are designed for close-up voice, making them poor at measuring ambient room noise.
    • USB condenser microphones (for podcasting) give the best desktop results but are rarely available to casual users.
    • Built-in laptop microphones vary enormously by model. Lenovo, Dell, and HP business laptops tend to apply heavy noise cancellation.

    For any serious noise assessment, a recent smartphone (iPhone 7+ or Android 2018+) will give significantly more consistent results than most desktop setups.

    Check System Audio Settings

    Windows

    Settings → System → Sound → Input. Make sure the correct microphone is selected and the volume is not at zero. Click "Device properties" to check if enhancements or noise cancellation are enabled — disable them for more accurate readings.

    macOS

    System Settings → Sound → Input. Select the correct microphone and check that the input level is responding when you make noise. macOS generally applies less processing than Windows.

    Linux

    Use PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) or your desktop's sound settings. Make sure the input device is not muted and the volume slider is at 100%.

    Microphone & Sound Meter FAQ

    Why won't my browser ask for microphone permission?

    Most browsers only allow microphone access on secure (HTTPS) sites. Snap Decibel Meter uses HTTPS, so the prompt should appear automatically. If it doesn't, check your browser's site settings and ensure microphone access isn't globally blocked.

    Why is the decibel meter showing 0 dB or no movement?

    This usually means the browser captured a different (or muted) microphone. Click the lock icon in the address bar, switch the microphone to your built-in or preferred input, and reload the page.

    Does the sound meter work on iPhone?

    Yes — Snap Decibel Meter works in Safari on iOS 14.3+. Some third-party browsers on iPhone don't support microphone input due to Apple restrictions, so use Safari for best results.

    Is my audio recorded or sent to a server?

    No. All audio is processed locally in your browser using the Web Audio API. Nothing is recorded, stored, or transmitted — your privacy is fully preserved.

    Why is my reading different from a real sound level meter?

    Phone microphones have built-in compression and gain control that limits very loud sounds, and Snap Decibel Meter is uncalibrated and unweighted — it references your ambient noise floor rather than an absolute sound pressure reference. Expect the numbers to differ from a professional meter, especially at very quiet levels and above roughly 100 dB.
